Business Administration – MBA

The MBA programme is intended for anyone aiming to develop their business and management career.
Students on the programme come from the UK, other countries in the European Union and from further afield.
In this way we are able to provide a global perspective on business affairs.
You will normally need to have a good degree or equivalent professional qualification and either at least twelve
months’ work experience of management, or compensating strengths in academic ability, general experience or
potential and a determination to succeed in a management career. These conditions encourage students to share
and learn from their peers as well as from faculty. There are no age limits for entry onto the programme.

The Canterbury Business School MBA comprises three elements. The first is a compulsory element of 10
modules:
Financial Reporting, Human Resource Management, Marketing Analysis, Managing Information, Management
Economics, Management Accounting, Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management, Strategic
Management, Research Methods.
The compulsory element is followed by the elective element where you select three modules from a set of topics
on offer which reflect current business and management issues.

Following the satisfactory completion of the taught part of the programme there is a dissertation or project of
10-15,000 words based on research into a management issue and which synthesises management practice and
theory.

Why do an MBA?
If you are considering becoming an MBA student for a year, you will want to know the difference it will make
to you.
Your focus on your future job prospects means that you are likely to be concerned about the value of your
qualification as well as the relevance of the content of the course.

What does Business want?
In today's highly competitive job market the well qualified, intelligent, decision makers are the people who will
achieve the top jobs. Recruiting the right people has become a major issue for many organisations and they go to
great lengths to make their choices as objective as possible. Businesses need to feel confident that the senior
managers they recruit have skills as well as a good knowledge base. They want applicants to have a
demonstrable track record which validates their business knowledge and managerial skills. Recruiting
organisations also want to know that the specific MBA held by the potential senior manager has credibility and
currency in the business world.
It is no longer sufficient to hold an MBA : it must be a demonstrably good MBA Programme

University of Hull

MBA in Financial Management
The School of Accounting, Business and Finance offers a very successful one-year, full-time taught MBA,
Postgraduate Certificate, and Postgraduate Diploma, in Financial Management. These programmes include
general management subjects as well as more specialist subjects such as management control systems, stock
market theory and practice, portfolio theory, financial analysis, international financial management and financial
modelling. Around 60 students are attracted to the programme each year.

Structure
The programme has two main objectives: the first is to promote the development of accountants, financial
managers, financial planners and decision makers, by providing an introduction to contemporary developments
in the area of financial management; the second is to reinforce accounting and finance specialisms with an
understanding of the broader (though still vital) aspects of general management.
The first semester provides a core of management subjects comprising six topics; Financial Management,
Systems Approaches to Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, Financial
Decision Making and Strategic Management. In the second semester students concentrate on specialist
subjects in the field of finance, while the third semester contains two case study modules focusing on up-to-date
issues both in Corporate Finance and also in Corporate Strategy.

This MBA programme offers an education in all the important aspects of modern-day financial management. It is
designed to produce well-informed business people who can combine the fundamentals of financial management
and training covered on the programme with their own practical experience. The range of business opportunities
is therefore very wide. Prospective students may come from many varied business and management activities,
and job prospects for our MBA graduates are extensive.

Admission
The programme is intended for specialists in accounting or finance who are graduates (or equivalent) in
accounting, finance, or a relevant discipline such as economics.
An equivalent qualification might be a postgraduate diploma or a professional qualification. Applicants who
possess a non-relevant degree, postgraduate diploma or professional qualification, should normally have five
years' appropriate experience. Indeed, we welcome applications from successful business people who do not
hold the usual academic qualifications.
Overseas candidates should have equivalent credentials, but candidates whose mother tongue is not English
must also provide evidence of their proficiency in the English language.

Executive MBA
The main objectives of this flexible, two-year, part-time programme are to enhance the job performance of
participants in their present positions and to prepare them for further, substantial career progression. The
Executive MBA therefore has a strong strategic and general management focus and is tailored for mid-career
managers who have good support from their employing organisations.
The wide range of options will appeal to managers from a variety of functional areas by giving them access to
processes outside their normal sphere of operation. A practical appreciation of the application of theory is our
aim, coupled with extensive participation from delegates with personal experience drawn from a wide variety of
backgrounds.

The Executive MBA operates a modular system with teaching weekends (Friday to Sunday) normally held on
eight ,occasions through the year. Assessment of each module is by written assignment. During each teaching
weekend there is a choice of module options available.
This not only minimises disruption of participants' normal workload at their employing organisations, but also
gives them the greatest degree of flexibility in building a programme tailored to their needs and interests.
Participants choose 12 modules from a range of 17 and attend a Project Methodology workshop which results in
a 15-30,000 word within-organisation project or dissertation.

The course is thus designed to allow the two-year programme to be completed with minimum disruption to normal
workload. We devise individual programmes to match circumstances and aspirations, so participants are able to
start the course at any preferred time during the year. Moreover, administration of the course allows for
maximum flexibility in putting all these features into effect, for it recognises the constantly changing demands
imposed on participants by their employing organisations.

Admission
The prime requirement for admission to this programme is practical working experience at managerial level.
Applicants should normally hold a first degree, a postgraduate diploma, or a suitable professional qualification,
but we welcome applications for successful business people who do not hold the normal academic qualifications.
Each application is considered on its merits, not only from the point of view of what the participant will gain from
the programme but also what the programme and the other course participants will gain from the applicant's
involvement.

in mind.

Both routes are designed to develop more innovative, enterprising and effective managers with the requisite

There is a general management/strategic focus, with an emphasis on the personal development of the manager.
A high level of participation is required from course members.

MBA Education Leadership
The course has many unique features. It starts with a three day diagnostic module to develop a personal skills
and competency profile. Ongoing individual counselling and support is given to relate course inputs to personal
competency development needs.

The course develops individual management skills through inputs and workshops on six key areas of school
management: strategic management, financial management, human resource management, marketing, managing
quality, and current strategic issues. Each of these areas is covered by a three day residential programme, with
structured extension activities to meet the specific needs of each participant.

The International Management Perspective element may take many forms, including attendance at international
conferences and exchanges with colleagues in other counties. This overseas element is a negotiated learning
experience. The expectation is that school leaders will gain an international perspective on developing trends in
the education world and address significant issues facing all self-managing schools.

This course can also be taken by cohorts of overseas-based students by arrangement.

Tuition & Assessment
In semester 4, after a research methods weekend, each participant undertakes a management study which
focuses on some aspects of his/her own school's development needs.

In addition to the above provision tutorial support is organised on an individual basis throughout the course.
Assessment at all stages of the programme is by regulated projects based on participants' institutions.

MBA specialising in European Management
This specialism provides training through an international education - the course requires you to study in two
countries. You will study the first semester taught in German in Berlin, or in Spanish in Valencia, or in Finnish in
Mikkeli or in English in Rennes. The second semester is in London and is taught in English. The European
Management specialism is specifically designed to train managers who want to work in an international,
competitive business environment. You will develop not only appropriate managerial and technical skills but also
enhanced linguistic and communicative skills for cross-cultural environments.

During the first semester you will focus on the particular challenges faced by European firms in their immediate
environment through the study of business strategy. You will study marketing, finance and human resource
management, and consider the impact of the EU on business. You will also study business English. The second
semester in London focuses more on the skills you will require as a European manager in an international
environment. You will benefit from the experience of studying with students from several different countries.

The final part of the course is the management project Ð a real life project commissioned by a company or
business which we will normally identify for you. Generally, the project will involve a process of organisational
change and have a European or international focus. You will begin your project during February and complete it
by mid-September.

Assesment
Assessment on our MBA Programme is designed to aid your learning and takes place through a combination of
examination, assignment and dissertation.

Teaching and Learning
You will learn through both lectures and seminars, and work extensively on case studies, the emphasis being on a
participative learning approach. You will spend at least as much time each week undertaking private study, or
working with colleagues in action learning groups.

Careers
Students completing the course have progressed to work in international companies which demand the range and
flexibility of their skills.

MBA specialising in International Management
The MBA International Management focuses on issues which are particularly relevant to transnational firms and
cross-cultural business generally. A particular strength of the University is the specialism of many academic staff
in areas of contemporary international business and management. There is a dedicated research centre in
International Business; staff also publish and consult widely in appropriate international arenas.

The first semester of the International MBA builds a strong foundation in marketing finance, business strategy,
human resource management and the international business environment. The second semester develops this
with its international management theme: courses are held in international management strategy, international
management skills, internatoinal marketing and finance. The MBA project will be a practically-orientated
management consultancy project in an international context.

MBA
Our programme is structured in two stages: the core programme is followed by the option to specialise either in
General management or Marketing management (if you choose to specialise in marketing, you will be awarded
the degree of MBA (Marketing)). The core programme starts with an Induction session to help you settle into
the programme, begin to establish key relationships within your group and orient yourself on the campus. We
then cover the following topics:

Marketing will introduce you to the foundation concepts of marketing customer analysis, competitor analysis,
pricing, brand audits and management for example to help you understand the brand value within organisations.
Operations management will familiarise you with the tools and techniques for effective management of
operations, from investment decision-making and efficiency analysis to motivation of staff.
An understanding of accounting is essential to modern business. Our Finance and accounting module will show
you how to assess financial viability using techniques such as ROI, CAPM and net present value, as well as
understand balance sheets and annual accounts.
People are often an organisation's greatest asset, so our Managing people in organisations module will cover
the structures within organisations, demonstrating how different models affect business outcomes. Quantitative
methods will demonstrate how to analyse and manipulate statistical and financial data to test out different
scenarios and outcomes.
Information systems management will bring you up to date with the latest advances in IT and show how these
are most effectively used in modern management. Key issues covered include database management, data
mining, video-conferencing, decision-making, and the effective collation and retrieval of management
information.
Strategic management looks at organisations from the Chief Executive's point of view, analysing the drivers for
strategic development such as vision, leadership, and communication, and discussing the key success factors for
effective management of organisational change.
Our Management environment module identifies the dominant current trends in management, analysing these
within the group to identify key issues likely to require change within organisations.
Communications strategy will show you the importance of internal and external communications in achieving
business objectives. Real-life examples Shell'sBrent Spar, the fall of the Ratner jewellery chain, the mixed
fortunes of Laura Ashley, for example, all demonstrate clearly the impact of mismanaged communication
strategies.
Corporate strategy develops the concepts introduced in Strategic management, showing you how to analyse and
assess strategic options and make a clearly argued and well supported recommendation for action. Having
designed a strategy is one thing, implementing it successfully is quite another. In our Human resource (change)
strategies module, we provide techniques to help you develop 'change agent' skills, explaining the use of
mentors, champions, key decision-formers, and the role which organisational processes such as reward
strategies can play in achieving objectives.

The two specialist streams run alongside the core programme. The General management modules cover the
following topics:
Management accounting looks in depth at management accounting and financial analysis, giving you a
framework for efficient collection and reporting of financial data. Human resource management identifies best
practice human resource issues affecting recruitment, performance management, reward and retention, using
case studies to provide real-life examples.
Strategic marketing looks at product portfolio management, new product development and strategic
repositioning, drawing on multinational case studies as examples.
Strategic finance will help you to understand and therefore control the key financial drivers of organisations.
Topics covered include how and when to go public, disposals, strategic acquisitions and investor relations.
Strategic operations management develops further the foundation concepts from the core programme, looking at
major commercial operations such as factories, financial services and transport.
Project management will familiarise you with project management tools such as GANT and PERT charts, time
management, cost accounting, as well as devices frequently used in business such as penalty clauses and
indemnity.

For participants choosing the Marketing stream, modules include:
International marketing tackles the complex organisational issue of marketing in a global marketplace, covering
topics such as the assessment and segmentation of international markets, agents, direct entry or partnership
strategies, pricing and local or global marketing strategies.
Marketing seminars provide an opportunity to discuss key marketing issues within an informed group. Putting
either multinational firms or often participants' own organisations under the microscope, group discussion flags
up key problems and offers solutions.
Marketing in special environments looks at marketing issues relevant to specific sectors such as retailing, not-
for-profit, public and government, drawing on real-life case studies to demonstrate theoretical problems.
Marketing thought and practice assesses the many marketing gurus for example, Porter, Ansoff, Hamel,
McDonald showing how their methodologies can best be adopted for practical solutions.

Finally, all participants will be asked to write a dissertation. This should be around 10,000 words on a
management-related topic.

Teaching is by experienced tutors, many with management experience in their specialist field, and is delivered
throughlectures, seminars, workshops and group work. The modules are assessed by a combination of exams
(including case-study analysis) and reports, assignments, seminars and presentations.

You may apply at any stage of the year, but since places are in high demand, we recommend you contact us at
least eight weeks before the start of the programme. Once you have been made an offer, we ask you to send us
a £250 non-returnable deposit to secure your place.

We also run a pre-MBA Foundation programme lasting six months, which starts in January. It is designed to
provide an introduction to management as well as an opportunity to improve English language skills and, if
completed successfully, ensures automatic entry into our next available full-time MBA programme.

MBA
This new one year full-time MBA programme commences in September and has been designed for the ambitious
manager from anywhere in the world who wants to gain a high quality MBA with a distinct focus - one that will
count in the real market-place of employment. Taught in blocks of eleven weeks at three European Business
Schools, the programme concludes with a group project. The focus of the programme is change, particularly the
transfer of technology in the context of emerging and transition economies. The programme has been designed
to focus on a number of specific themes and in so doing aims to assist managers in dealing effectively with their
careers as they develop. The objectives are:
To provide an overview of general management for managers in all sectors of the economy.
To strike a balance between effective problem solving, judgement and the process of implementation.
To manage the tension between the corporate vision and the requirement to practice.
To provide an environment where managers from different nationalities and organisational backgrounds can
interact.
To help develop participative working practices, an important skill particularly within organisations requiring
continual development.
To develop managers’ ability to 'learn to learn' - to become conscious of the concepts they use, how they were
formed and how they might be changed.

This is a postgraduate/post experience programme. The usual minimum entry requirement is therefore a
University level first (Bachelors) degree in any subject (major) or equivalent. As the programme will be
conducted in English all applicants must produce evidence of the ability to work in the English language. This
might be TOEFL, IELTS, Pitman tests (available at the British Council) or possibly GMAT or equivalent. Please
include your test score. Applicants will normally have organisational experience at a level of responsibility which
will enable them to benefit from and contribute to the programme.

All applicants are required to complete an MBA Application Form which should be returned to the Manchester
MBA office. An MBA Selection Panel will review the information provided and applicants who meet the entry
requirements may be invited for interview. The MBA interview would enable the Course Team to assess the
applicant's ability, their managerial/organisational experience and their motivation and commitment to the
programme. The interview would also provide applicants with an opportunity to meet members of the MBA
Course Team and to explore issues and questions of concern to them.

Please indicate the centre which would be most convenient for you to attend should you be invited for interview.

Costs

MBA
The course aims to develop effective managers who are proactive and responsive to an environment of
continuing change, and who have a broad understanding of the functional relationships and their interplay in
overall corporate management. It also aims to prepare managers and professionals for senior management
careers and to provide insight into the major issues of international management.

The course focuses personal effectiveness and people management towards the management of the total
activities of the organisation and its relationship with the environment in which it operates.

Named Awards
Candidates wishing to acquire a named award may undertake prescribed modules to attain such an award.
Named awards current human resource management, with operational management knowledge and skills.
Strategic Management modules take students into the global environment and give them the opportunity to
apply what they have learnt by running a virtual organisation, normally in a multi-cultural setting.
Personal and Managerial Development focuses on developing self-awareness, evaluating the student's
interpersonal strengths and limitations and developing insight and key management competencies.
Research Methodology, Options and Dissertation: these modules enable students to focus on their individual
managerial interests. Research and Methodology Workshops provide an understanding of management
research and techniques for collecting, analysing and interpreting data. Options or 'electives' give students the
opportunity to specialise or broaden their development. Electives may be selected from those available within
the MBA or other appropriate University courses. Students undertake a practice-based project enquiring into a
managerial or organisational issue of their own choosing, subject to School approval. The project culminates in a
dissertation with a maximum length of 20,000 words.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment
All students attend an induction weekend in mid-September. Part-time and open learning students attend two
other residential schools during their programme. Full-time students have 16 hours per week dedicated to
formal teaching sessions, while part-time students attend from 2.00 - 9.00 pm one day per week, normally for
30 weeks per year. Teaching methods include tutorials, lectures, group work, case studies, simulations and
learning resource materials, and computer conferencing for open learning students.

Assessment is based on a combination of examinations, coursework and dissertation.

Funding
Funding may be provided by employers, career development loans, or for overseas students through Chevening
Awards (via the British Council), or overseas government awards.

Professional Recognition
The MBA is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the Association of Chartered Certified
Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Management.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of two to three years' business management experience is required, plus, normally, a good honours
degree or a postgraduate or post-experience qualification such as a DMS, or a professional qualification
equivalent to a first degree, eg from the Institute of Personnel and Development. Mature candidates over the
age of 25 with substantial management experience, but without the stated academic qualifications, will also be
considered.

Overseas applicants may be required to provide a satisfactory Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT)
(or equivalent) score, whilst also being able to demonstrate their competence in English.
