University of National and World Economy
THE UNIVERSITY OF NATIONAL AND WORLD ECONOMY (UNWE) is one of the biggest and oldest higher education institutes in Bulgaria. It was founded in 1920 in Sofia and was named "Balkan Near East Institute" (Free University of Political and Economic Scinces).
The Free University of Political and Economic Sciences originally had three departments:
Diplomacy and Consular Affairs;
Administration and Finance;
Business and Comerce.
In 1939 the Free University became a state educational institution, named the Higher State Institute for Economic and Administrative Sciences with two departments: Finance and Administration.
For a short period (1947-1951), the University operated as a Faculty of Economy and Social Sciences of the "St. Kliment Ochridski" University of Sofia and had three departments:
National Economy
Individual Economy
Statistics and Planning
In 1951 the University regained its independent status under the name of the "Karl Marx" Higher Institute of Economics with four faculties:
Planning and Statistics;
Finance and Accounting;
Industry and Transport;
Comerce.
By a resolution of the Academic Council passed on 26 April 1990, the "Karl Marx" Higher Institute of Economics was renamed as the University of National and World Economy and adopted a new department structure.
The Post-Graduate Institute estabilished by the UNWE is headed by General Director, a position currently occupied by Prof. Ivan Dushanov, Ph.D.. The post-graduate education was introduced in 1954 with the official approval of specialised programs for conducting courses for raising the qualification, knowledge and skills of the post graduates.
At present the Post-Graduate Institute offers education to university graduates in up to 18 month courses.The curricula meet the standards of the respective institutions in the developed countries.
The Institute is equipped with the latest equipment in terms of teaching, lecture halls, 3 computing labs, phonethic labs and videohalls.
Now the Post-Graduate Institute has the following schools:
Higher School for International Business
Higher School for Economics and National Security Administration
Higher School for Economics and Industrial Branches Managment
