Program Definition
The Master's Program in Economics and Management Science is designed to give students the knowledge, skills and methods which are necessary for critical and successful future involvement in the worlds of Economics and of Business. In particular, the international orientation should give students the understanding necessary for engagement on an international level.
In offering this Program, The School of Economics and Business Administration is drawing on numerous international contacts and on the knowledge and experience of the distinguished German and foreign academics who constitute the School's teaching staff.
The primary emphasis of the Program is on imparting rigorous and quantitative methods of economic analysis, which are applied to Advanced Microeconomic Theory, Game Theory, Industrial Organisation, Public Economics and Macroeconomics, International Finance Markets, International Business Management and Marketing.
Please note that this is not an MBA Program. The content of our Program and our expectations of the Program participants are appropriate to the academic demands of a Master of Arts qualification.
The languages of tuition in compulsory subjects are English and German, each course being offered in alternate years in each language. It is possible to complete the first semester courses entirely in English, but, in order to obtain the maximum benefit from the Program, participants have to learn German.
It is envisaged that 60 students will participate in the Program, of whom no less than half should be non-Germans. The Program should be completed, including examinations, within four semesters, although it should be possible to complete the Program in fewer semesters, provided that proven commensurate ability can be demonstrated.
Students with a previous degree (Bachelor's or Diplom) are awarded the M.A. in Economics and Management Science and an official certificate of equivalence with the Diplom der Wirtschaftswissenschaft, whereas students with a Vordiplom are awarded the Diplom der
Wirtschaftswissenschaft and an official certificate of equivalence with to the M.A. in Economics and Management Science based on passing all examinations.
The Master's Program is designed according to the rules of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), a European standard set up to ensure smooth transfer of credits earned at different participating colleges and universities throughout Europe.
Program Structure
It is the individual student's responsibility to choose courses in order to obtain the necessary number of credit points. Tuition is offered in the form of lectures, seminars and practice sessions in each topic. It is likely that each topic will be available in English or German in alternate semesters or years. Students may choose any selection of topics in any order, as long as they comply with the requirements of the Program Structure and offer sufficient credit points.

Academic Tutors
There are two academic tutors attached to the Program, whose role it is to compensate for any specific gaps in knowledge the new participants may have and help students to set up individualized curricula. The tutors offer academic advice based on individual needs. There also is a possibility of setting up a series of tutoring sessions on specific topics, based on students' demands. In the past, tutoring sessions covered an introduction to microeconomics, macroeconomics and maths for economists.

Conditions of Acceptance
The Master's in Economics and Management Science is equivalent to a German University Hauptstudium. The applicant is therefore expected to have acquired a grounding in Economics or a related discipline, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics or Information Technology which is equivalent to a German Grundstudium or to at least two years' study at a non-German university.

When allocating places, particular weight will be given to the applicant's aptitude for quantitatively-oriented economic analysis.
In addition, the applicant is required to take the GRE (Graduate Records Examinations) General Test and to submit the results with his/her application. A knowledge of other foreign languages is desirable.
Das Programm
Das Programm STUDIERENDE UND WIRTSCHAFT ist ein gemeinsames Projekt der regionalen Wirtschaft, der Arbeitsverwaltung und der Universität. Es wurde im Januar 1990 an der Universität Bielefeld eingerichtet. Ziel des Programms ist es zum einen, Studierenden der Geistes-, Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften Orientierungen in Berufsfeldern zu ermöglichen, die traditionell nicht im Blickfeld der genannten Zielgruppen stehen. Zum andern erhalten Unternehmen die Gelegenheit, sich ein Bild über die spezifischen Qualifikationen und betrieblichen Einsatzmöglichkeiten der Teilnehmer/innen zu machen und auf diese Weise ein interessantes Fach- und Führungskräftepotential kennenzulernen.

Visiting Students

Students of foreign universities who would like to study at the University of Heidelberg (e.g. as part of an exchange programme) and do not wish to obtain a degree here, may enrol for a limited period (Kurzzeitstudium), usually not longer than two semesters. The admission requirements are:

- excellent knowledge of German;
- at least one year of studying the same subject at the student's own university.
- Visiting scholars are not admitted to subjects with limited intake (Numerus clausus).

The Faculty of the Sciences of Economics is the youngest department of the University of Karlsruhe while at the same time having a long tradition. It has been founded in 1972 by dividing
the former Faculty of Humanities and Economics that used to be responsible for the education of economists with technical orientation. Today the faculty is the biggest
